Jason's self-portrait |
(April '02) Here's Jason and his air crew. To the left of him is the pilot. It's hard to tell in this picture but his name is on this plane (back seat). It reads "Finster." |
Jason
flies in the EA-6B Prowler. The EA-6B is closely related to the now obsolete A-6
Intruder, which was featured in the movie Flight of the Intruder. On an infamous
note, the Marine version of the EA-6B Prowler was the culprit in severing the ski-lift
cable wire that killed those people in Aviano, Italy.
The Prowler has a crew of four people: one pilot and three ECMOs (electronic counter-measures officers). One ECMO sits next to the pilot and serves as the navigator. The other two sit in the back seat and do their electronic "magic." This includes listening for enemy radar signals, sending out signals to jam enemy radar, and launching HARMs (high-speed anti-radiation missiles) to destroy enemy radar sites. Jason is an ECMO. Jason's call sign is Finster, after Baby Face Finster from the Bugs Bunny cartoon. Apparently somebody thought he looked and acted like the cartoon character. The Prowlers were first built in 1971. Despite being
almost 30 years old, the word is that they will be around until 2010.
