Cappadocia
Cappadocia is a region of Turkey filled with underground cities and strange rock formations. Some of the terrain is similar to Utah or Arizona, and some of it looks like another planet. So alien, in fact, that some scenes from Star Wars and the TV show Flash Gordon were filmed in Cappadocia. Jason and I spent the weekend here on a group bus tour organized by the base.

Millions of years ago, a volcano eruption sculpted these
strange cones and "fairy chimneys." The underlying layers of rock are so
soft you can sculpt it with a spoon; it hardens when it comes in contact with air. Early
Christians carved out churches and monasteries to hide from persecutors.

"What does this rock remind you of," asked our tour guide, Raki. See the photos below for inspiration. |

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to take a camel ride. However, I did get to witness several camel bodily functions, including spitting, apple eating, and the usual number 1 and number 2. | I paid a dollar for this photo op! |
