Vienna, Austria
Though we only had a day and a half to spend in "Wien," as it's called in German, we quickly found out why it's such a romantic place to visit. It took about three hours by train to get to Vienna from Salzburg. Our first night in town we had a quiet dinner and I sampled my first taste of Viennese coffee: it was rich, frothy, and delicious. The second night we took in a Mozart/Strauss concert at the Orangery room at Schönbrunn Palace. Vienna is where Mozart spent most of his adult life, and he once had a musical duel with his rival in the Orangery. The concert combined a symphony with ballet dancers and opera singers, so it was very entertaining to watch as well as listen.

Stephansplatz. A carriage ride is a great way to see Vienna's renowned architecture in a short period of time. | The Danube River is even more beautiful at dusk. |

St. Stephans Church, Stephansplatz. For a small fee we took an elevator to the top of the main tower and got a closer look at the unique roof tiles. |

The Prater Amusement Park. Only a few rides were open though. Being a big James Bond fan, I wanted to see sites from "The Living Daylights" that were filmed here. The giant Ferris wheel is one of them. | The Vienna Wheel (Wiener Riesenrad) is open year-round. We had the entire wheel to ourselves during our ride. Instead of chairs, this ride has oversize cabins. | |
