Pam returns from Turkey tripOn November 1st, I left with fellow Navy wives Melinda and Lydia to embark on a 10-day trip to Turkey. We spent a few days in Istanbul, cramming as much sightseeing and shopping as we could, and then flew on to Adana in southern Turkey to meet up with our husbands at the Incirlik Air Base. Jason and I took a weekend trip to Cappadocia, a volcano-sculpted region north of Adana, and a day trip to Mersin on the Mediterranean coastline. Jason leaves for TurkeyTurkey Day came early this year for Jason. On September 9, he left for the Incirlik Air Base on his first deployment.
Many months of mission simulations and classroom instruction will be put to the test as Jason partakes in Operation Northern Watch while stationed in Turkey. Jason's journey to Turkey started at SeaTac airport in Seattle. We got there around 7 PM, plenty of time for his 11:20 PM flight on USAirway. I was going to stay with him until the bitter end, but his flight was delayed until 1:30 AM, and I had to work the next day. We hung around for a few hours and then said goodbye in the airport parking lot. A few other guys in his squadron were flying with him. The rest of the squadron leaves September 20. Jason will be returning home just in time for Christmas (December 20th). In case you're wondering about the recent earthquake in Turkey, the Incirlik base is located in southeastern Turkey, many miles from where it struck. No historic sites were damaged in the quake and tourism has not been affected. The Incirlik base is near the city of Tarsus near the Mediterranean coast (See Map). |
Long Day's Journey into Night, then into day again...Jason took various commercial and military flights to get to Turkey, with layovers in Pittsburgh Total Travel Time:24 hours! |
