Turkey

November 1999

Despite being in the Middle East, which conjures up images of women dressed to their eyeballs in black garb, Turkey is a very modern country. Some women wear scarves, some women wear blue jeans. A lot of people walk around with cell phones. Turkey just recently celebrated its 75th anniversary as a Republic on Oct. 31, so while I was there, I saw Turkish flags hanging up just about everywhere we went. But the land that Turkey occupies has a longer history...back to biblical days.
