March 23-26, 2001
While Jason was at Nellis Air Force Base for two weeks of desert combat training, I decided to pay him a visit for the weekend since Las Vegas is so close to the base. We stayed at the Tropicana hotel, which is right on the Strip. We went in all the themed hotels, saw a Penn & Teller show, sampled some of the cheap buffets, visited Freemont Street in old Vegas, and drove to the Hoover Dam.
The Eiffel Tower in Nevada? Here's me in front of the Bellagio hotel
(far right) and the Paris Hotel, two of my favorites on Las Vegas
Boulevard, a.k.a., the Strip. The Bellagio is the most expensive hotel in Vegas and features an elaborate outdoor water show every 20 minutes. The water sprays so high into the air that it sounds like fireworks. The show I caught was accompanied by Frank Sinatra's Luck Be a Lady. You can ride to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Directly behind the tower is a replica of the Louvre museum.

This is the closest Jason will probably ever get to Paris, considering his aversion to the French ("I'll only go to France to conquer it," he always jokes). |
We caught Penn and Teller's magic show at the Rio Hotel. Afterwards they signed autographs, so Jason had a photo taken with Teller and I with Penn. We actually heard Teller speak; he never utters a syllable while performing. (Look at Penn's one red fingernail on my shoulder. Weird, huh?) Did you know that Penn does the program announcements on Comedy Central? |
Casey (right) and his younger brother, Kelly (who was visiting from L.A.), came with us. |

Fremont Street in the older part of Vegas. The ceiling displays a light show every hour (2.1 million lights). |
At Nellis Air Force Base, home of the famous Thunderbirds and home to Red Flag, the annual combat training exercise that Jason's squadron participated in this year (read more). It's also home to this groovy tank. | We rented a car and drove to the Hoover Dam. While driving over the dam we crossed the Arizona border and entered Mountain Time Zone for a few minutes. |
